ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Nina Nolte presents her classic car of the 50s. The title of the artwork is 50s SUNBEAM. I forms part of her revered series WHEELS AND WINGS. The artwork showcases the rear and left side of a bright yellow-white Desoto convertible, classic car. The two round brake lights emit an intense red glow. While the shock absorber reflects a shade of blue, enhancing the orange-ocre-yellow sky. The use of complementary colors, orange and blue, brings vibrancy to the artwork.
Nina Nolte’s fascination with classic cars undoubtedly traces back to her early childhood. Her mother drove a magnificent Cadillac in the 1950s in El Salvador, where the artist was born.
The original artwork, ’50s SUNBEAM, measures 115 x 130 cm (45 x 51 inches). It was created in 2003 in her studio in Marbella as a homage to her mother’s beautiful Cadillac. Although Nina Nolte was too young at the time to remember it, photos and films from that era, depicting her young mother proudly posing next to her Cadillac or washing it, have always deeply touched her. Not to be forgotten are the photos in her grand parents’s albums, which Nina Nolte, even as a child, repeatedly looked at, depicting the family with the latest automobiles in the 1930s. Therefore, it’s not surprising that in the 1980s, the artist imported two rare Mercedes from the 1950s from Cuba to Germany.
The artwork 50S SUNBEAM was last exhibited at Strong Women exhibition at the MAC Museum in Singen, Germany, in 2018. The museum borrowed the artwork, along with another vintage car artwork, from the owner in Madrid for the show.
