In 50s SUNBEAM, Nina Nolte masterfully captures the rear and left side of a bright yellow and white Desoto convertible. This classic car, a symbol of 1950s grandeur, is brought to life with meticulous detail. The artwork is striking with its intense red glow emanating from the two round brake lights. This detail is not just visually striking but also evokes a sense of the car’s vitality and the era’s fascination with bold, eye-catching design elements. Adding to the visual feast, the car’s shock absorber reflects a shade of blue, which stands out against the orange-ochre-yellow sky. This use of complementary colors—orange and blue—infuses the piece with a dynamic vibrancy that captivates the viewer’s attention.

Nina Nolte’s fascination with classic cars is deeply rooted in her personal history. Born in El Salvador, her early childhood memories are peppered with the image of her mother driving a Cadillac in the 1950s. This Cadillac, a symbol of luxury and elegance, played a pivotal role in shaping Nolte’s artistic vision. Although the artist was too young to remember those days vividly, the photographs and films from that era, which often showed her young mother proudly posing next to her beloved Cadillac or meticulously washing it, left a lasting impression on her. These visual memories have been a wellspring of inspiration for her, influencing much of her work.

Furthermore, Nolte’s grandparents’ photo albums from the 1930s, which she repeatedly looked at as a child, featured the family with the latest automobiles of that era. These images have etched a deep appreciation for classic cars in her mind. This fascination even extended into her adulthood; in the 1980s, she imported two rare Mercedes from the 1950s from Cuba to Germany, highlighting her enduring passion for vintage automobiles, a Mercedes 300S Roadster of 1952 and a Mercedes 300SC coupé from 1957.

The original artwork 50s SUNBEAM measures 115 x 130 cm (45 x 51 inches) and was created in 2003 in her studio in San Pedro Alcantara, Spain. This piece was a heartfelt homage to her mother’s beautiful Cadillac, a tribute to the personal and historical significance these classic cars hold in her life.

The artwork 50s SUNBEAM was last exhibited at the “Strong Women” exhibition at the MAC Museum in Singen, Germany, in 2018. The museum borrowed this artwork, along with another vintage car piece, from its owner in Madrid for the show. This exhibition aimed to celebrate the strength and creativity of women artists, and Nolte’s 50s SUNBEAM fit perfectly into this theme, showcasing not just her technical skill but also her ability to weave personal history into her art.

Nina Nolte’s work is a testament to how personal experiences and memories can shape an artist’s vision and output. Her reverence for classic cars and their symbolic representation of a bygone era is beautifully encapsulated in 50s SUNBEAM, making it a cherished piece in her WHEELS AND WINGS series. This artwork is not just a visual delight but also a poignant reminder of the artist’s journey and the timeless allure of classic automobiles.

The original artwork can now be visited in her studio in Marbella.
