PITO, PITO COLORITO by Nina Nolte
Acrylic on canvas, 130 × 93 cm (51.2 × 36.6″)
Set against a grid of scattered letters from the Spanish children’s rhyme “Pito, pito, colorito,” this work captures a moment of stillness, curiosity, and latent tension.
The girl, dressed in a traditional school uniform, stands composed yet expectant — caught between play and obedience, choice and chance.
The rhyme, often used to make playful but decisive selections, forms a backdrop of cultural memory. By isolating the child within this system of letters, Nina Nolte reflects on how early rules, roles, and language shape identity. The result is a vivid and subtly unsettling meditation on the innocence of decision-making — and the systems behind it.
